How to Get Your Northern Virginia Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
Last updated: October 12, 2026

No one can guarantee an AI recommendation and no one can buy one. What works is making your business easy for AI systems to understand and verify: state plainly what you do and where, keep your facts consistent everywhere, earn detailed reviews, get mentioned by credible local sources, add structured data, and answer real customer questions on your own pages.
More Northern Virginia customers now ask an AI assistant for a recommendation instead of scrolling a list of search results. They type something like "who is a reliable roofer in Fairfax" or "best pediatric dentist near Reston" into ChatGPT or read the AI summary at the top of Google, and they act on what it says.
No one can guarantee that an AI assistant will recommend your business, and no one can pay to be listed in ChatGPT's answers. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. What you can do is make your business easy for these systems to understand, verify, and trust. That work is called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO), and most of it overlaps with good local marketing.
These seven steps are the ones we think are worth your time.
How AI recommendations work, in plain terms
AI assistants and AI search features assemble answers from the web: business websites, directories, review platforms, news and local publications, and other public sources. Different tools weigh these differently and the details change often, so treat any specific rule with caution. The reliable principle is simple. The clearer, more consistent, and better corroborated the information about your business is, the easier it is for a system to describe you accurately.
1. State plainly what you do, where, and for whom
Vague copy such as "we deliver innovative solutions" gives a machine nothing to quote. Compare it with: "Smith Roofing is a licensed roofing contractor in Fairfax, Virginia, replacing and repairing shingle and flat roofs for homeowners in Fairfax, Vienna, and Burke." The second sentence names the business, the service, the license, the location, and the audience.
Put sentences like that on your homepage, your About page, and each service page. Write them for a reader first. If a person can understand them at a glance, a machine probably can too.
2. Keep your business facts consistent everywhere
Your name, address, phone number, hours, services, and service areas should match on your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory listing. When sources disagree, an assistant may pick the wrong one or leave you out. A quarterly check of your main listings is time well spent.
3. Earn detailed reviews
Reviews that describe what you did, for whom, and where give AI systems and people specific language to draw from. A review that says "replaced our water heater in Springfield the same day" is more useful than "great service." Ask for reviews steadily, never offer incentives, and respond to each one. Our guide on getting more Google reviews covers the compliant approach.
4. Get mentioned by credible third parties
What others say about you often carries more weight than what you say about yourself. Useful sources include local chambers of commerce, trade associations, supplier and manufacturer directories, local news coverage, community sponsorships, and reputable industry directories. Focus on a handful of real, relevant mentions rather than a pile of low-quality listings.
5. Add structured data
Structured data is code that labels the facts on your page in a format machines read easily, such as your business name, address, hours, services, and frequently asked questions. The common types for local businesses are LocalBusiness, Organization, Service, and FAQPage. Structured data does not guarantee any placement, but it reduces ambiguity, and it supports rich results in traditional search as well.
6. Make your content easy to crawl and read
If your key information lives inside images, PDFs, or content that only loads after a script runs, it may never be read. Put important facts in plain page text with clear headings. Check that your robots.txt file and security settings are not accidentally blocking the search crawlers you want to reach you, and that your pages load reliably.
7. Answer the questions customers actually ask
People ask assistants full questions, so build pages and FAQ sections that answer full questions directly. Good examples for a Northern Virginia business include:
- How much does [service] cost in Northern Virginia, and what affects the price?
- Do you serve [town], and how quickly can you come out?
- What licenses and insurance do you carry?
- What happens after I contact you, step by step?
- How do you compare with [common alternative]?
Answer in the first sentence, then explain. Specific, sourced, and honest answers are more useful to readers and easier to reuse.
Test it yourself: once a month, ask two or three AI assistants the questions your customers would ask, and record whether your business appears and how it is described. Results vary by tool, by wording, and by day, so look for patterns over time and not a single answer.
What to expect
AI search is new, and measurement is still immature. Demand for AI-driven discovery is growing, but most local customers still use traditional Google and Maps too. That is why we treat GEO as an extension of strong local SEO and not a replacement. The same steps, clear facts, steady reviews, real mentions, and well-built pages, serve both. For the bigger picture, see our GEO and AEO service.
