Hiring an SEO Company in Fairfax, VA? 10 Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Last updated: October 12, 2026

Before you sign with an SEO company in Fairfax, VA, ask which parts of Fairfax they plan to target and why, exactly what they deliver each month, who owns your accounts and content, how they report on leads and calls, what the contract terms are, and what would make them tell you not to hire them.
If you are hiring an SEO company in Fairfax, VA, the first question to ask is not about rankings. It is about geography: which Fairfax are they talking about? The answer changes what they should build, and it is a good test of whether an agency understands this market or is reusing a template.
Our broader guide to SEO services in Northern Virginia covers what to expect across the region. This article is narrower. It covers the questions that matter specifically for businesses in and around Fairfax, where a confusing map, a crowded market, and a mix of consumer and professional-services businesses make the choice harder.
Use these ten questions in your first conversation with any agency, including ours.
Why Fairfax is a harder SEO market than it looks
"Fairfax" means at least two things. The City of Fairfax is a small independent city. Fairfax County is a large county made up of many communities, and many people with a Fairfax mailing address live or work in unincorporated parts of the county. A customer in Oakton, Burke, or Chantilly might search "near Fairfax" without being inside the city limits.
On top of that, you are competing with businesses in Tysons, Reston, Vienna, Falls Church, Springfield, and Arlington for many of the same searches, and with nationwide brands that outspend local businesses. The mix of businesses is varied too: neighborhood shops and home services sit alongside law firms, accountants, consultants, and government contractors, whose customers search very differently from homeowners.
1. Which parts of Fairfax do you plan to target for my business, and why?
A strong answer names specific communities that fit your customers and explains the reasoning, including whether you serve the city, the county, or both. A weak answer repeats "Fairfax" without distinguishing.
2. How will you set up my Google Business Profile for my service area?
If you travel to customers, the profile should be a service-area business with accurate areas and no fake storefront. If you have a real location, the address must be genuine. An agency that suggests a virtual office address to look more "local" is creating a suspension risk.
3. Who owns the accounts, the content, and the website?
You should own your Google Business Profile, analytics, Search Console, domain, and content. Ask in writing what you keep if you leave. The answer tells you a lot about the agency's approach.
4. What will you do for me each month, specifically?
Insist on a concrete list: pages written, profile posts published, reviews answered, technical fixes made, citations built. "Ongoing optimization" is not a deliverable. Our own plans include a monthly SEO blog post, a monthly GEO/AEO content piece, weekly Google Business Profile posts, and 24/7 review responses, which you can see on the pricing page.
5. How will I see what you did and what changed?
Ask to see a sample report. It should show actions taken, rankings or visibility, calls and website leads, and next steps, in plain language. If a report is mostly screenshots of tool dashboards, you will not know what you are paying for.
6. What are the contract terms and how do I leave?
Many agencies require six or twelve month contracts. That is not automatically bad, but you should know the minimum term, the notice period, and what happens to your assets. Month-to-month is possible, and it forces an agency to keep earning the work.
7. What timeline is realistic for my business?
SEO usually takes months to show clear results, and the timeline depends on competition, your starting point, and your category. Be skeptical of anyone who promises first-page rankings in a few weeks. A good answer explains what you will see early, such as profile and technical improvements, and what takes longer.
8. What experience do you have with businesses like mine in Northern Virginia?
Ask for examples. A business serving homeowners needs a different approach from a law firm or a government contractor. Our portfolio shows the types of Northern Virginia businesses we have worked with.
9. How do you handle reviews and reputation?
An agency should have a compliant system for requesting and answering reviews. If they suggest buying reviews, offering incentives, or screening who gets asked, walk away, since those tactics violate Google's rules.
10. What would make you tell me not to hire you?
This is the most revealing question. A trustworthy agency will tell you when SEO is not the right first move, such as when your website is broken, you have no capacity to handle more leads, or your budget is too small to compete for a certain keyword.
Red flags to watch for
- A guaranteed ranking or a guaranteed number one position
- Secret methods or refusal to explain what they do
- Pricing that is very low with a long lock-in contract
- Link-buying or private blog networks
- No access for you to your own accounts
- Reports that do not mention leads, calls, or revenue
- Pages that swap the town name in an identical template
Ask the agency to describe, in two sentences, the first three things they would fix for your business and why. Specific answers, tied to your website and your market, mean they looked. Generic answers mean they did not.
What about cost?
Pricing varies widely, and the most useful comparison is what you get for the money. Our guide to website and marketing costs applies equally across Northern Virginia.
